Welcome to ``HBO1.'' This document contains specialized installation, operation and trouble-shooting notes, along with keyboard shortcuts.
System Software
``HBO1'' requires Macintosh System Software 6.0.7 or later. The Macintosh Quadra and later models require System Software 7.0 or later. An LC with a 13-inch monitor also requires System Software 7.0.
QuickTime
``HBO1'' requires that you have QuickTime[tm] 1.6.1 installed on your machine. Drag the QuickTime 1.6.1 icon from the ``HBO:QuickTime'' folder into your System folder and restart your machine.
Use a hard disk for more speed.
``HBO1'' will run directly from the CD-ROM, but will run somewhat faster if you copy the ``HBO1'' application to your hard disk. The ``HBO1'' application is about 300 kilobytes in size. You will find it at the top-most (root) level of the CD-ROM. Copy it from the CD-ROM to the hard disk, either into a folder or to the top-most level of the hard disk.
Keyboard Shortcuts
``P,'' ``F15'' or Keypad ``*'': Pause toggle
``Command'' 0-9: Volume control
Left Arrow: Go to next screen in sequence
Right Arrow: Go to previous screen in sequence
``Return'' or ``Escape'': Return to the last screen
Pressing the mouse button while a movie is playing allows you to stop the movie.
After Dark Module
``HBO1'' includes an After Dark[tm] screen saver module called Schtick. Schtick will select and display jokes from ``HBO1'' at random when After Dark is activated. To use Schtick, you must install the After Dark program available from Berkeley Systems. Copy Schtick to the After Dark Files folder with the other After Dark modules.

If After Dark is activated while you are playing QuickTime movies from another application, such as ``HBO1,'' the movie playback will ``interact'' with the After Dark animation. We consider this a feature, rather than a bug.
Trouble-shooting Guide
Program cannot be launched--message says, ``There is not enough memory available to run `HBO1.'''
During a certain part of the program, a message appears saying, ``Last task could not be completed because memory ran out.''
``HBO1'' requires at least 2.5 free megabytes to run. Therefore, if you are running System 7.0, your machine needs at least 4 megabytes; 2 megabytes to run System 7.0, and 2 megabytes to run ``HBO1.'' Check the Apple menu in the Finder (select ``About This Macintosh'') to verify the amount of memory available to you.
If you are running on a 4-megabyte machine and still don't have enough free memory, try the following:
* Disable all unessential system extensions (INITs). This can be accomplished under System 7 by restarting while holding down the shift key. If this frees up enough memory, try enabling each system extention individually to identify which uses the most memory.
* Set the RAM cache to the lowest value.
* Under System 6.0.7, try using the Finder instead of Multifinder.
* Under System 7 on certain machines, you can get enough memory by using the virtual memory feature. However, this may cause audio glitches during movie playback.
Note: Do not set the ``HBO1'' application to a value lower than 2200K, as this will cause out-of-memory errors.
When you restart your machine, you get a message which says, ``QuickTime installation failed because it was already installed.''
You have two versions of QuickTime in your extensions folder. Delete one of them.
Can't hear audio.
Audio on ``HBO1'' plays back through the Macintosh speaker (not the CD-ROM drive).
* Make sure the volume is turned up on the Sound Control Panel. If a cable is connected to your audio jack, make sure the amplifier is turned on.
* Make sure you didn't accidentally hit the ``S,'' ``F12,'' or Keypad ``/,''
which toggle audio volume on and off.
When audio is playing there are clicks, drop-outs or other glitches.
* Under System 7, make sure virtual memory is turned off. This feature will cause audio glitches if there is a memory/disk swap while audio is playing back.
* Under System 7, try turning file sharing off. Normally ``HBO1'' should work fine with file sharing on, but if someone is accessing your machine, the CPU will slow down enough to affect audio quality.
* Some non-standard Extentions or INITs (or programs running in the background under Multifinder) may also slow down the CPU enough to affect audio quality.
* ``HBO1'' is designed to work with an Apple CD SC drive. If your drive is slower than this model, it may not be fast enough for ``HBO1'' to play continuous audio. Models that may have problems include:
NEC CDR-36 and CDR-72
EMAC Metro CD
Chinon CDA-431
Pioneer/Relax DRM-600

Audio sounds scratchy.
The ``HBO1'' audio is low-fidelity, designed to play back through the Macintosh speaker. Under these conditions it should sound fine. However, if you listen to it through headphones or a hi-fidelity amplifier you may hear some scratchiness or hiss due to aliasing problems with the 8-bit samples. This noise can be reduced by applying a low-pass filter to the audio. If you have a simple tone control, adjust it to reduce treble.
Audio gets out of sync.
There is an anomAly in Apple's system software that, on some machines, causes the audio to get out of sync with the video.
Program seems slow.
Because most of the data is stored on a CD-ROM, which is slow by design, ``HBO1'' cannot run as fast as some hard-disk-based applications.
* Try copying the ``HBO1'' application (about 300K) to your hard disk. This will speed up some operations, but when the application needs to access the CD to get sounds and pictures, there will still be some noticeable delays.
* If you have enough memory, you will get a slight speed improvement if you increase the memory allocated to ``HBO1'' to 2700K or higher.
Movies suddenly start playing slower than usual.
This sometimes happens when another application or extension is using a lot of
system memory (like After Dark). Restarting your machine should fix the problem.
